Bootle enjoy a weekend to remember with cup and league win
09/09/2009
LAST weekend was one of unbroken celebration at Wadham Road as Firwood Bootle’s win over Colwyn Bay on Saturday clinched the Liverpool & District Competition Premier League title with two games to spare, and the team completed the ‘double’ the follow
For the first two hours on Saturday Colwyn Bay were in little trouble, having been provided with a good start by openers Charlie Clubb and Graeme Jones, who put on 53 together at a run a minute. Clubb went on to make 64 from 109 balls and received useful support from Chris Rowley (35) and Ryan Holtby (20). Bootle’s two spinners, David Snellgrove and Patrick Jackson, eventually began to get amongst the visitors’ lower order, and from 155-5 the remaining five wickets collapsed for the addition of 28 runs so that Bay were all out for 183 in the 60th over, Jackson finishing with 4-53.

Bootle, with 53 overs at their disposal in reply, began with partnerships of 33 and 36 for the loss of openers Snellgrove and Craig Prince, but it was when Steven Mullaney teamed up with Neil Williams at 115-3 that the innings really caught fire to put the result beyond all reasonable doubt..

Mullaney hit 14 fours and 5 sixes in a fabulous innings of 108 not out, and Williams was unbeaten on 24 playing the valuable supporting role in a stand of 72 which took Bootle to victory by 7 wickets in the fourth over of the last twenty, setting off scenes of celebration as the new champions were rapturously applauded from all parts of the ground. .

Orrell Red Triangle chose to bat first in Sunday’s cup final and were going reasonably well at 79-2 after the first twenty overs. Opener and captain Chris Riley stayed in for 2 hours 27 minutes making a very good 56 for his team but he lacked the really substantial support which would have been needed to take the visitors’ total beyond 200. Steve Dutton captured four useful wickets at a personal cost of 24 runs and Orrell Red Triangle were all out for 158 with fifteen balls of their 45 over allocation unused. .

Bootle had reached 45-2 after 11 overs when rain forced the players from the field, and off they stayed for over an hour. On resumption, the home side were set a revised target of 74 to win in a total of 21 overs without losing more than five wickets. Jackson and Jack Kelliher played with the correct mixture of aggression and caution in the face of some top rate seam bowling from Andrew Mercer, and the 29 runs required were knocked off in one ball short of seven overs to give Bootle the victory by 8 wickets. A weekend of celebration indeed.

John gave the opposition 2 hours to get the runs but it was obvious from the start Northern were going to struggle, although Bootle rushed through the overs and took steady wickets Northern managed to hold on for the draw, Northern have dominated these fixtures in the past few seasons so Bootle now feel they will have the edge when they next meet.

Match Report: A good win in the hot sunshine, John won the toss and decided to have a bowl even though it was very hot, at one point Northrop looked like they were on for a big total but Pikey rolled back the years and restricted Northrop to a mediocre score on a good hard wicket.
Robbo and AJ got us off to a steady start, when AJ was out Tom Carr came to the crease and was out first ball, Tom thinks this may be his first duck so he wasn’t to happy, this brought Burto to the crease and he took a shine to the bowlers who were suffering in the afternoon sun, he was out to a bizarre run out but the damage was already done.
David Britt and James Stanley saw us home with 7 overs to spare, David finishing on 22 not out. This moves the 3s up to 3rd in the league with our first home game on Saturday, well done lads.

Toss Won By: Firwood Bootle
Points: (Bootle 5 batting pts + 3 bowling pts, Birchfield 2bat pts + 2 bowl pts)
Result: Draw
Match Report: First game at the Civ this season turned out to be a bit of a damp squib, the highlight of the game was the return of Liam O’Donovan, having not played for what seems like years Liam carried on were he left of, smashing the ball with ease to all parts of the ground. His 55 not out was a pleasure to watch and the start of things to come I hope. The other high point was the state of the ground, Gary has done a wonderful job getting the pitches ready and the track just looked the part, there is still someway to go yet but we are moving in the right direction, just a container to sort now Peter, ( wink wink). As for the game it was evident at the tea interval Birchfield had decided the total was to big to chase and right from the off decided to block out, but the lads stuck to the task at hand and worked hard for 7 wickets, a few dropped chances may have made the difference but after each drop we seemed to take a wicket a few balls later, keep up the hard work lads and the results will come.

Firwood Bootle Vs New Brighton PD

Toss Won By: Firwood Bootle
Points: Firwood Bootle 20 pts + 2 batting pts, New Brighton PD 5 bowl pts
Result: Firwood Bootle win
Match Report: Are 3rd game in a row at the Civ and a great win, the visitors, New Brighton PD, had us in a lot of bother at 59 for 5 but a quick 29 from the skipper saw us get to 129, still a low total but something to defend. John decided to go with a slow attack to see if the damp conditions would help the bowlers and he was proved right, a run out first ball got the lads going and they never looked back, Billy Powell bowled well at the start taking a great C & B, finishing with figures of 9 - 3 - 1 - 18, but it was the skipper who did the damage finishing with figures of 18 - 11 - 5 - 27. Liam O’Donavan finished of the tail taking 2 wickets with the first 2 balls of his first over, (2 full tosses), so a great day in the field gave us a very good win on a rain affected day.
