Bootle enjoy a weekend to remember with cup and league win
09/09/2009
LAST weekend was one of unbroken celebration at Wadham Road as Firwood Bootle’s win over Colwyn Bay on Saturday clinched the Liverpool & District Competition Premier League title with two games to spare, and the team completed the ‘double’ the follow
For the first two hours on Saturday Colwyn Bay were in little trouble, having been provided with a good start by openers Charlie Clubb and Graeme Jones, who put on 53 together at a run a minute. Clubb went on to make 64 from 109 balls and received useful support from Chris Rowley (35) and Ryan Holtby (20). Bootle’s two spinners, David Snellgrove and Patrick Jackson, eventually began to get amongst the visitors’ lower order, and from 155-5 the remaining five wickets collapsed for the addition of 28 runs so that Bay were all out for 183 in the 60th over, Jackson finishing with 4-53.

Bootle, with 53 overs at their disposal in reply, began with partnerships of 33 and 36 for the loss of openers Snellgrove and Craig Prince, but it was when Steven Mullaney teamed up with Neil Williams at 115-3 that the innings really caught fire to put the result beyond all reasonable doubt..

Mullaney hit 14 fours and 5 sixes in a fabulous innings of 108 not out, and Williams was unbeaten on 24 playing the valuable supporting role in a stand of 72 which took Bootle to victory by 7 wickets in the fourth over of the last twenty, setting off scenes of celebration as the new champions were rapturously applauded from all parts of the ground. .

Orrell Red Triangle chose to bat first in Sunday’s cup final and were going reasonably well at 79-2 after the first twenty overs. Opener and captain Chris Riley stayed in for 2 hours 27 minutes making a very good 56 for his team but he lacked the really substantial support which would have been needed to take the visitors’ total beyond 200. Steve Dutton captured four useful wickets at a personal cost of 24 runs and Orrell Red Triangle were all out for 158 with fifteen balls of their 45 over allocation unused. .

Bootle had reached 45-2 after 11 overs when rain forced the players from the field, and off they stayed for over an hour. On resumption, the home side were set a revised target of 74 to win in a total of 21 overs without losing more than five wickets. Jackson and Jack Kelliher played with the correct mixture of aggression and caution in the face of some top rate seam bowling from Andrew Mercer, and the 29 runs required were knocked off in one ball short of seven overs to give Bootle the victory by 8 wickets. A weekend of celebration indeed.

Sefton Vs Firwood Bootle

Toss Won By: Bootle
Points: Sefton Park (20 pts + 4 bat pts), Bootle (4 bowl pts)
Result: Sefton Park won by 94 runs
Match Report: A very poor display at Sefton Park last weekend saw Bootle 2’s lead of 23 points at the top of the table cut to just 2 points. Electing to bowl first on what seemed to be a poor wicket Bootle’s bowler never found any rhythm or control that has seen them dominate batting line ups this year. Sefton declaring at 45 overs on 181 for 9. Billy Smith taking 6 wickets.

No comments on the batting as we were bowled out for less than 100 and a game to forget. Two league games left now and only maximum points in each will see us over the finishing line ahead of last years champions New Brighton.

Toss Won By: Wigan
Points: Wigan (3 bat pts + 2 bowl pts), Bootle (4 bat pts + 4 bowl pts)
Result: Match Drawn
Match Report: When you get the fixtures each year any Bootle 2nd X1 skipper would look at Wigan away and say ‘DRAW!!!!!!’.

Well you can guess last Saturday’s result was no great surprise either. Bootle again losing the toss to Cullen’s side and were put into bat first. Michael Gill showed what a class act at 2nd team level he is by hitting an unbeaten 104. Both he and brother Andy put on 103 for the 5th wicket. Bootle finally declared on 199 for 4 off 45 overs. We just narrowly missed out on a further batting bonus point.

The Wigan response faltered and they ended up on 170-9 in 48 overs. Both Andy Gill and Billy Smith taking 3 wickets each. Our friends Formby did us a favour in turning over New Brighton at Rake Lane in the surprise result of the day. This enabled us to extend our lead at the top of the table to 19 points. Fleetwood Hesketh are the next league match at home.

Southport Trinity – we won comfortably with Eccles scoring 55 not out. Next round is at home against ether Maghull or Orrell Red Triangle.

Firwood Bootle Vs Sefton
Game Date: 13/06/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Firwood Bootle
Details: Firwood Bootle 221-4d (43 overs) (Ehlen 79, Carr 48 [113-1st wkt], Eccles 51*)
Batted 2nd : Sefton
Details: Sefton 181 (52.1) (Wylie 51, J Baird 45, ED Williams 35, P Kelly 20; Pike 5-51, Ehlen 3-7)
Toss Won By: Bootle
Points: Bootle (20 pts + 5 bat pts), Sefton Park (4 bat pts + 2 bowl pts)
Result: Bootle won by 40 runs
Match Report: Bootle 2’s bounced back from last week to beat Sefton Park this weekend. Winning the toss and electing to bat Bootle got off to a flyer with Ehlen hitting 79 off just 48 balls faced. The openers putting on a stand of 113 for the first wicket. Young Tom Carr contributing a very mature 48. Dave Eccles then kept the momentum going with a positive 51 not out as the two’s declared on 221 for 4 off 43 overs.

Sefton started pretty much the way we left off with Wylie hitting a quick fire 50 as Sefton looked to be in control. Taking the pace off the ball with Smith and Pike in tandem saw the Sefton lads falter. Pike taking 5 for 51 in a bowling spell that brought back the years.

The game was looking to be heading for a draw when Ehlen 3 for 7 & Gallagher taking the important wicket of Ted Williams, saw us home. Sefton ending up 188 all out in 52.1 overs.

Bootle 2’s taking 25 points and securing their 9th win of the season.

New Brighton Vs Firwood Bootle
Game Date: 06/06/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : New Brighton
Details: New Brighton 177-5d (34.4) (Hughes 73, MI Burns 25, Beahon 21)
Batted 2nd : Firwood Bootle
Details: Firwood Bootle 90 (33.3) (Ehlen 13; AM Evans 16.3-7-28-9)
Toss Won By: Firwood Bootle
Points: New Brighton (20 pts + 4 bat pts), Bootle (2 bowl pts)
Result: New Brighton won by 87 runs
Match Report: Well it certainly rained on the Bootle 2’s parade on Saturday as they suffered only there second defeat of the season. Unfortunately at the hands of the current 2nd X1 champions New Brighton.

For most of the early afternoon it looked increasingly unlikely that we would get a game started due to the constant light rain that was falling. At 3.45pm we took to the field due to the rain ceasing and after winning the toss New Brighton were asked to bat first.

At 38 for 2 on a dry wicket the came Hughes who went onto to score an emphatic 73 as New Brighton posted a formidable total of 177 for 5 inside of 35 overs.

New Brighton then proceeded to take wickets on what now had become a helpful wicket due to rain throughout there innings. Andy Evans ending up with 9 wickets in the game with 7 Bootle batsmen being bowled. We were bowled out for 90 inside 28 overs.

A very disappointing end to winning run. We still remain 17 points ahead at the top of the table and questions will be asked of the players now for the rest of the season. A poor performance which can not and will not be accepted again if we are to regain the league title.

Firwood Bootle Vs Ormskirk
Game Date: 30/05/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Ormskirk
Details: Ormskirk 152 (49.1) (45 overs = 143-7) (J Illingworth 43, S Illingworth 41, Meredith 33; WG Smith 4-40)
Batted 2nd : Firwood Bootle
Details: Firwood Bootle 155-6 (35.3 overs) (Eccles 34, Ehlen 26, Radford 25; Meredith 3-31)
Toss Won By: Ormskirk
Points: Firwood Bootle (20 pts + 5 bowl pts), Ormskirk (3 bat pts + 3 bowl pts)
Result: Firwood Bootle won by 4 wickets
Match Report: It was good to see another solid performance on Saturday, as having lost the toss Ormskirk elected to bat on what looked to be a very good batting strip. So it seemed as they raced to 82-1 off just 17 overs. Neither of the starting bowlers managed to hold a good line on such a good deck. Enter the frame of young William Smith and Gilly who started to drag the opposition onslaught back to less than three runs per at one stage in the first innings. Billy taking 4 for 40 off 17 overs in the game. A great bowling effort from the old timer on a wicket suited to other bowlers in the team.

Ormskirk we eventually dismissed for 152 in 49 overs. Not enough on a good wicket.

Shillcock maintained his consistent run by chasing a wider one than last week and was caught behind for a blob. Innings of 26 from Ehlen, Eccles 35, Radford 25 and stalwart effort of 20 from Andy Gill at the end saw us home in 35 overs.

This was the ninth straight win and the defeat of New Brighton at Northern means that the 2nd team move 39 points clear at the top of the table.

Lytham Vs Firwood Bootle
Game Date: 25/05/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Lytham
Details: Lytham 111 (33) (Virdee 53, Wiggans 10; AP Gill 8-46)
Batted 2nd : Firwood Bootle
Details: Firwood Bootle 114-2 (26) (Burton 71*, M Gill 37* [110*-3rd wkt])
Toss Won By: Firwood Bootle
Points: Lytham (1 bat pt + 1 bowl pt), Firwood Bootle (20 pts)
Result: Firwood Bootle won by 8 wickets
Match Report: The usual jaunt to the seaside happened again this bank holiday Monday as we travelled to Lytham. (Why do we get Lytham every Bank Holiday?)

After winning the toss we stuck them into to bat on what looked like a very decent batting track as usual. Andy Gill often in the one’s this year finally got to turn his arm over and returned a match winning performance of 8 for 46. Only Virdee of Lytham making any sort of resistance with a fine 53.

Lytham posted a low score for the wicket at 111 all out in just 33 overs. Lytham now braving the brief light rain shower during tea and early innings made a good start pegging us back to 4 for 2 as both openers fell cheaply. Skipper Ehlen out for a duck having hit the ground and being caught behind. (Unsure when that law came into force!!!)

Then entered Mikey Gill (37no) and Adam Burton (71no) who took us home in just 26 overs. Burtons knock was certainly the highlight of the day even surpassing the 8 for 46 of Gill.

That win now takes us 20 points clear at the top of the table and extends the winning sequence of games to 8.

Formby Vs Firwood Bootle
Game Date: 23/05/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Firwood Bootle
Details: Firwood Bootle 189 (43.5) (Mears 59, Eccles 42, Molloy jnr 21; Bush 6-74)
Batted 2nd : Formby
Details: Formby 184 (47.5) (Eastwood 34, Madigan 30*, Bush 23; Molloy jnr 5-40, Ehlen 4-48)
Toss Won By: Firwood Bootle
Points: Formby (4 bat pts + 5 bowl pts), Firwood Bootle (20 pts + 4 bat pts)
Result: Firwood Bootle won by 5 runs
Match Report: Me Me Smith fires blanks as Bootle 2’s march on and top the table.

A great game at cricket path last Saturday as Formby put up a brave fight on home soil. Batting first on what looked a bowler friendly wicket we found ourselves at 30-3 with the weak Formby attack springing a few early surprises. Then came the middle order stand of over a hundred from Mears (59) & Eccles (42) which enabled us to post a total of 189 all out in 44 overs.

Formby started well in reply and even though they had a frequent fall of wickets they maintained there scoring rate and with batsmen 8&9 at the crease they look to be on there way to reaching there target. Alas they didn’t as we bowled them for 184 and took 24pts. Good effort lads on what became a very flat wicket in the end.

Northop Hall Vs Firwood Bootle
Game Date: 16/05/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Firwood Bootle
Details: Firwood Bootle 201-4d (38.2) (M Gill 80*, RJ Smith 43; Fox 3-39)
Batted 2nd : Northop Hall
Details: Northop Hall 124 (39) (J Smith 50*, Barnes 27; WG Smith 3-18, Ehlen 3-22)
Toss Won By: Northop Hall
Points: Northop Hall (1 bat pts + 2 bowl pts), Bootle (20 pts + 5 bat pts)
Result: Bootle won by 77 runs
Match Report: The seconds winning streak continued to 6 games undefeated. A very good performance with bat and ball mean’t we claimed another 25 points. Again Michael Gill batted superbly for his 80 not out with enabled us to declare well before the 45 overs. Although the opposition over rate was slower than slow.

We bowled Northop out cheaply with the wickets shared amongst the bowlers.

A good performance – keep it going boys!!!

Firwood Bootle Vs Southport and Birkdale
Game Date: 09/05/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Firwood Bootle
Details: Firwood Bootle 204-4d (32 overs) (M Gill 66*, AP Gill 47, Ehlen 37, Shillcock 34)
Batted 2nd : Southport and Birkdale
Details: Southport and Birkdale 84 (36.4) (K Skelton 18, J Marsh 16; WG Smith 4-8, Molloy jnr 3-17)
Toss Won By: Southport and Birkdale
Points: (20 pts + 5 bat pts), Southport and Birkdale (2 bo
Result: Bootle won by 120 runs
Match Report: At last the 2nd team lads finally discover the batting prowess that many a team in the league fear. The openers battered the Southport opening pair all over Wadham Rd which saw the Bootle innings race to 82 for 1 off just 10 overs.

Getting to 120 for 3 the rain came down and threatened to spoil the game but the Gill twins (happy & dopey) returned to the wicket to make hay whilst the sun shone. Young Michael again looking in great nick with a solid 66 not out and Old Andrew departing on 47 before the innings closed at 204 for 4 in just 34 overs. (The captain was declaring before his 50 anyway!!!).

The Southport innings never really got going and stuttered along the way. A very good opening spell of 3-17 from young Molloy showed that we potentially have a genuine quick bowler within our midst at last. Billy Smith move over!!!

It would only be fair to say that ‘Me Me Me Smith’ did eventually bowl in his own selfish fashion and wrapped up the Southport innings taking 4 for 8. Well done boys!

Firwood Bootle Vs Northern
Game Date: 04/05/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Firwood Bootle
Details: Firwood Bootle 166-9d (45 overs) (Shillcock 33, M Gill 26; Ehlen 25; Derbyshire 5-45, Flick 3-23)
Batted 2nd : Northern
Details: Northern 144 (46) (Flick 47, M Garcia 33; Gallagher 3-20, WG Smith 3-30)
Toss Won By: Northern
Points: Bootle (20 pts + 3 bat pts), Northern (2 bat pts +
Result: Bootle won by 22 runs
Match Report: Amazing he loses the toss again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again we are asked to bat first to which stand in skipper Davies must have thought that was a huge mistake as the two openers raced to 52 off just 7 overs.

With the light drizzle coming down for most of the Bootle innings the Northern lads stuck well to there task in the field.

The introduction of Derbyshire saw the two openers depart in short time of each other and then proceeded to take 5 for 45 in difficult conditions.

Some hard hitting by Arkle in the end saw us declare on 45 overs for the first time this year at 166 for 9.

With the rain ceasing through the tea interval the state of the game changed a little. The boys stuck to there task well throughout the Northern innings and we ended up bowling them out for 144.

Both young Billy and old Gally taking three wickets each. The winning run continues.

Wallasey Vs Firwood Bootle
Game Date: 02/05/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Firwood Bootle
Details: Firwood Bootle 143-9d (50) (45 overs = 116-7) (M Gill 28; Ward 3-23)
Batted 2nd : Wallasey
Details: Wallasey 90 (41) (Sutton 28; Ehlen 4-13)
Toss Won By: Wallasey
Points: Wallasey (4 bowl pts), Bootle (20 pts)
Result: Bootle won by 53 runs
Match Report: Ehlo lost yet another toss and again we were asked to bat first on what was a very green and damp wicket. (Seamers get ready!)

We tried to get off to a start but were pegged back by some tidy Wallasey bowling and managed to declare the innings on 143-9 (50 overs).

No doubt about the batting performances here with Roger and Mikey Gill sharing a solid stand in the middle of the innings. Young Arkle making a contribution at the end of the innings.

Wallasey started brightly in the second innings with Carruthers hitting hard (nothing cultured) in the early stages. He gave his wicket away again trying to hit the ball out of the ground.

The stream of wickets started to fall then with Wallasey being bowled out 90. Skipper Ehlo pegging the Wallasey middle order back with an effective seam display and ending up with 4-13 off just 8 overs.

Back to back wins and signs that the momentum required to win the league is starting to come through.

Firwood Bootle Vs Liverpool
Game Date: 25/04/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Firwood Bootle
Details: Bootle 166 all out (off 46.3 overs)Andy Ehlen 38, Michael Gill 51, Ged Radford 25; Parkinson 5-40, Harrison 3-38
Batted 2nd : Liverpool
Details: LIVERPOOL 94 all out (28) (A O'Hara 29; WG Smith 4-7, Heard 3-31)
Toss Won By: Liverpool
Points: Bootle (20 pts), Liverpool (5 bowl pts)
Result: Bootle won by 72 runs
Match Report: A much better performance all round this week for the 2nd team not only the first win of the season but the lads continued there solid performance in the field. Burto was certainly a thorn in the side for opposition batsmen.

After Liverpool skipper John Crossley won the toss he asked us to take first knock. A decision he must have regretted as the two openers put on 49 for the first wicket off just 6 overs. Ehlo taking a great liking to the opening bowlers he dispatched them to the boundary 9 times in his knock of 38. A missed chance for a bigger score.

Michael Gill continued to hold the innings together and hit a solid 51 to help us reach 166 all out. A disappointing total but a better performance from the lads.

The Liverpool innings got off to bad start when they lost the Liverpool skipper to the 2nd ball of the game playing on to a quick ball from young Arkle. Again another steady and effective opening spell from the youngster who had several experienced players hopping around the crease. A great sight to see!

It would be wrong not to mention the spin twins who demolished the Liverpool order, with Billy Smith taking 4 for 7 and Saul Heard 3 for 31. It would be fair to say Saul bought Billy’s wickets.

Well done boys – its going in the right direction keep it going!

Leigh Vs Firwood Bootle
Game Date: 18/04/2009
Competition: 2nd Eleven - Premier Division
Batted 1st : Leigh
Details: Leigh 112 a/o (39.5 ov) W. Banner 32 ( Billy Smith 4-28, Anthony Molloy (Jrn) 2-20, Andy Gill 2-4)
Batted 2nd : Firwood Bootle
Details: Bootle 83 a/o (23.4 ov) Andy Gill 23, Adam Shillcock 14, (W. Banner 4-21, C. Melia 4-11)
Toss Won By: Leigh
Points: Leigh (20 pts + 1 bat pt), Bootle (5 bowl pts)
Result: Leigh won by 29 runs
Match Report: A game of two halves is the best way to describe this game from the Bootle perspective. All the hard work was done in the first half of the game. Losing the toss and being asked to field first we duly equipped ourselves very well in the field. A job very well done by all the bowlers.

We then came to the batting or the attempted Bootle innings. Enough said!

It would be unfair to say that Leigh did not bowl well, because they did, but so many players getting bowled in any innings was quite alarming. A bad afternoon at the office and lets see if we can get a full days work out of the boys next week when we play Liverpool at home.
